About TFWA Cannes
The TFWA World Exhibition & Conference is a consumer goods fair for tax-exempt goods, such as those items offered in the duty-free areas of airports, ships or ferries. This market segment has more than doubled in value over the past ten years, with Asia now accounting for the largest market share. Since 1984, TFWA – the Tax Free World Association – has organised the exhibition which takes place every year in early October in the sophisticated seaside resort of Cannes, France.
Structure and size of the exhibition.
492 exhibitors, just under 17,000 visitors and 3,000 premium brands participated in the 2016 exhibition on an exhibition space measuring just around 22,500 square metres. The products exhibited covered the following areas:
wine and spirits, tobacco, perfume and cosmetic products, fashion, accessories, leather goods, jewellery, home improvement products and tableware, giftware, stationery items, toys, electronics, smoking-related products, delicatessen products and confectioneries, press products.
The exhibition is targeted towards a mainly European audience of experts but is increasingly starting to attract visitors from Asia and the Pacific region. A trend that is emerging thanks to the growing significance of Asia and Pacific regions. Premium manufacturers highly value TFWA because they are able to present their premium products to the relevant buyers of airports, airlines, shipping companies and the buyers of other retailers directly at their own exhibition stand. After all, the TFWA World Exhibition & Conference is the main PLACE to go for these buyers to find out about the latest products. Information obtained from the exhibition stand is only one of the event’s main features. Outstanding individuals give speeches and lectures at a wide variety of conferences in the run-up to the actual exhibition. The primary focus of these lectures and speeches is the so-called ‘Digital Village’ – an opportunity to generate increased earnings through digitisation. Growing uncertainty in world trade caused by political developments was the subject of much discussion at this year’s event. Key speakers included former President of the Tax Free World Association Erik Juul-Mortensen, former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and former President of Ireland, Mary Robinson. The 70th anniversary of the first opening of a duty-free shop in Shannon, Ireland, was also celebrated, and workshops took place once again as is the tradition. Another highlight was the opportunity to network and make professional contacts with other individuals and companies, often in the lovely surroundings of Cannes, for example, at casual events or golf tournaments.
